The Lionesses captured the heart of the nation with their Euros 2022 triumph and reaching the World Cup Final in 2023. Since then, there has been a major turning point in womens football with a propel and surge of interest from girls up and down the Country flourishing in the game.

Ratcliffe student and Sports Scholar, Lily Stevenson, continues to make her own triumphant strides in the sport.

On Sunday 7th April, Lily made her debut for Nottingham Forest Women’s 1st Team, at 16 years old. Lily became one of the youngest players in the club’s history to be selected for the 1st Team, contributing to a 2-0 win away at Stourbridge.

Lily’s passion for football started at the age of five, as a student in the Preparatory School. Lily started her journey as a Goalkeeper for Bingham FC. Lily was scouted for Leicester City FC Academy at eight years old. Playing alongside her twin brother, Alfie, Lily displayed incredible tenacity and ability growing up. Thriving in all sports, Lily’s love of football soon became paramount.

Lily joined Nottingham Forest Academy U16s this season.

Her enduring work ethic at training finally set the mark for a pivotal moment in her fledgling career. Lily caught the eye of Nottingham Forest Women’s Head Coach, Carly Davies, who selected her for the team.

Lily said,

It was incredible to be given the opportunity to play for the 1st Team. The training has been tough, but fun, and everyone has been very friendly.  I couldn’t believe it when I came on the pitch and made my debut! It was nerve-racking but also very exciting! It has only confirmed that I want to pursue football to the highest level I possibly can in the future, after my A Levels.

In her interview post-match, Carly stated,

A debut for a 16 year old is unbelievable and something we are really proud of.

Mr and Mrs Stevenson, commented,

We are thrilled and delighted that Lily has been given this opportunity to play football on such a stage. Lily has worked tirelessly week-in-week-out, for years, and she is an inspiration to many. We are so incredibly proud of her recent achievement, and we are confident she will continue to work hard whilst playing football at this level and studying for her A levels at Ratcliffe College.

Throughout Lily’s football journey, Ratcliffe College have been incredibly supportive and helpful enabling Lily to meet her full potential. We are very grateful and thankful for this ongoing support shown by all the staff at the school, and particularly, Headmaster, Mr Reddin.

Lily’s journey serves as an inspiration to all students, showcasing the heights that can be reached through hard work, perseverance, and a true love for sport.

We wish Lily every success at Nottingham Forest and throughout her A Levels at Ratcliffe College.
