INSPIRE – Shaping the Future: Reflections on Pursuing a Career in Politics and Law

Sixth Form | 10.12.2018

On Wednesday 5th December, Andrew Hilland gave a fascinating talk on his careers in law and politics.  Having studied Law at Oxford and New York universities, Andrew embarked on a career as a lawyer with Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP.  Andrew was able to offer highly valuable insights and advice to those applying for Law at university, both to Ratcliffe students and to those present from our maintained partner schools.

Andrew has since pursued a career in politics, working as political advisor to former UK Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, and is now standing as the Labour Party’s prospective parliamentary candidate for Lanark and Hamilton East.  As Director of the Inquiry on Protecting Children in Conflict and the Director of Research and Secretary to the Global Citizenship Commission, he was able to share with the audience why he is so passionate about human rights and the importance of young people’s engagement in the political process to make positive change.  Our thanks to Andrew for such an inspiring and entertaining talk.

On Wednesday 9th January at 5.20pm, we look forward to welcoming our first INSPIRE speaker of the new year, Dr Tom Wicks (Nottingham University): A mathematical journey to infinity… and beyond?
